Hugo Landry

Born in Gaspé in 1983, he lives and works in Quebec City. Trained in visual arts and graphic design at Laval University (Quebec).

For nearly ten years, Hugo Landry has been exploring the effects of colour as a vector of expression, seduction and, above all, joy. His large abstract paintings, covered in stripes, rainbows or multicoloured splashes, are sometimes rhythms and vibrations, sometimes explosions of energy.

The artist works mainly with a spatula, flat on canvas or on a wooden support. The arrangement of colours, which he spreads out in thick wefts or allows to explode by dripping, offers joyful prismatic sequences. Control, rigour and the search for balance are part of this treatment which draws on pop and optical art and gestural painting.

This is an original way for the artist to evoke diversity, the diversity of feelings, of beings and of a world that really has nothing uniform about it.
